Scrapper Blackwell:1903-1962. For any serious fan of blues guitar, Scrapper Blackwell is required listening. Blackwell was a part of several important breakthroughs in blues guitar in the 1930s. He helped integrate single string guitar picking with Leroy Carr’s vocals and piano riffs. Together they created a fresh sound in blues, influencing similar pairings for decades to come. As a soloist, his playing was clean and articulate. So much so, you’d swear he was playing jazz. It cut through the stock phrasings of rural blues with crisp treble notes that pointed forward to smoother urban blues. You’ll hear his imprint on Robert Johnson, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters and anyone else who expressed more intricate guitar playing after him.
