The Mississippi Sheiks
First recorded in 1930 'The Mississippi Sheiks' lineup consisted mainly of Walter Vincson guitar and vocals, and Lonnie Chatman on violin. After about five years of recording, and with significant contributions from Bo Carter and Sam Chatman, 'the Sheiks' had cut over seventy tracks for the Okeh, Paramount and Bluebird labels, including many hits such as ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’ and ‘Alberta Blues.’ The 21 tracks included in this playlist represent their best!
The Beale Street Sheiks
Frank Stokes and Dan Sane had been busking on Beale Street in Memphis since the early part of the century. Following a stint with a medicine show and work as a blacksmith, Stokes hooked up with Sane in August 1927 to record some sides with Paramount at their Chicago studios. They cut eight titles as The Beale Street Sheiks (one is untraced) two sessions followed in September 1927 and March 1929. The 16 tracks included in this playlist represent their best!
